Earlier this week, it was reported that a nefarious hacker had taken it upon himself to infiltrate the PunkBuster client of Battlefield 3, and ban innocent players from the game. Electronic Arts has since posted an update to the situation on Battlelog, and says it has “taken steps” to reverse the estimated 150 bans and improve...

You’ve probably been hearing for a few years now that PC gaming is floating dead in the water, but I’ll be the first to tell you that it isn’t. As a matter of fact, it’s on the rise, and if trends continue, we’ll be seeing it as a dominant platform like it was earlier in the century. That’s a pretty...

Soul Calibur V poster is… edgy

by ITN News - on Jan 9th 2012 - 1 Comment

A few days ago Namco Bandai surprised many with its very edgy and possibly NSFW Soul Calibur V promotional poster. They got plenty of attention, and tried the trick once more, with another edgy render of one of the in-game characters. But it appears that they took it too far this time. The poster, which you can see above, was published on their Facebook page, and apparently it was so offensive that many folks complained. And Namco took it down.

Vita Launch Lineup – Why It’s One Of The Best

by ITN News - on Jan 9th 2012 - No Comments

It seems like a necessity for a new gaming device — be it a console or handheld — to launch with at least one “blockbuster” title. Sony’s new handheld, the PlayStation Vita, has that sort of support to a degree, with big franchises like ‘Virtua Tennis’, ‘Everybody’s Golf’ and ‘Ridge Racer’ launching alongside ‘Uncharted: Golden Abyss’.

The US launch lineup, which we should assume would be the same as the Australian launch lineup, is very solid, with games like ‘ModNation Racers’, ‘Lumines’ and ‘WipEout’ adding to a very impressive collection of first-party and third-party games.

However, if for whatever reason the PS Vita launch isn’t especially enticing, the PlayStation Store may just have something you’re looking for. The most impressive thing about the Vita thus far is its decent range of quality PSP games, a collection of titles that, when added to the already-robust lineup of Vita-exclusive titles, makes the handheld especially appealing to gamers that never owned or played a PSP.

For those of us that did play PSP and its many games, we may not be as pulled in by what’s on offer for download. However, if you’re new to the PlayStation portable gaming experience, you have access to easily the deepest, broadest range of games available at launch, ever.

Just by looking at what’s available on the Hong Kong PSN, it’s obvious that PSP support is strong for Vita. Great PSP games help make up a fantastic collection of classic handheld gaming:

  • Dissidio 012[duodecim]
  • Fat Princess’
  • Final Fantasy TYPE-0
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta
  • Gran Turismo
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • LocoRoco (both games)
  • ModNation Racers
  • Monster Hunter
  • Motorstorm
  • Patapon 3
  • Persona 3
  • SOCOM: US Navy Seals Fireteam Bravo
  • Pro Evolution Soccer

Technically if you were a little short on cash at the Vita launch you could essentially go without buying any games and simply entertain yourself with a number of cheap and acclaimed PSP games, which is simply fantastic. These aren’t little arcade games or classic games from the 90s: they are lengthy, critically acclaimed titles from within the last few years, all affordable and priced between $10 and $50 AUD (when converted from HK Dollars).

This is a fantastic launch if you factor in what’s available for download, and even if you don’t, the Vita lineup on its own is still very solid. If you’re never owned or played a PSP, namely the system’s biggest and best titles, then the Vita’s launch lineup is easily one of if not the best you’ll experience.

Crysis 2 leads the list of 2011′s most pirated games

by ITN News - on Jan 3rd 2012 - No Comments

Editorial ‘game of the year 2011′ picks favored the likes of Uncharted 3 and Skyrim, but the pirate vote went to Crysis 2. According to statistics published by BitTorrent blog TorrentFreak, the PC version of Electronic Arts’ first-person shooter was the most-pirated game of the year 2011 with an estimated 3.92 million downloads.

The fact that Crysis 2 was more popular in the bootleg department than the year’s biggest-selling game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (which came in second with 3.65M BitTorrent downloads) could be attributed to the fact that an advance copy of Crysis 2 leaked to the internet one month ahead of its launch at retail. But according to TorrentFreak, downloads of this version only reached the tens of thousands, “the real boom came when the full version was released in March”.

Rounding out the top 5 list for the PC are Battlefield 3 (3.51M downloads), FIFA 12 (3.39M) and Portal 2(3.24M). TorrentFreak also compiled rankings for console games that saw the greatest number of BitTorrent downloads. On the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2 (1.28M) was ahead of Mario Sports Mix (1.09M), while on the Xbox 360 Gears of War 3 (0.89M) outgunned Modern Warfare 3 (0.83M).

Some BitTorrent download numbers were ‘helped’ by long gaps in game releases between different territories. The third most pirated Wii game was the European version of acclaimed role-playing game Xenoblade Chronicles. Until recently, Nintendo had no plans to publish the game in North America, which saw its BitTorrent download numbers rise to 0.95M. Last December it was finally announced that Xenoblade Chronicles would see a North American release in April 2012. One can’t help quoting Valve’s Gabe Newell, “Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem”.

TorrentFreak compiled the list using several sources including public BitTorrent trackers; all numbers are estimates. According to the blog, the PlayStation 3 is among the platforms that “get considerably less downloads and are excluded for that reason.” This might be attributed to higher ethics standards among the system’s user base or – more likely – larger file sizes due to the Blu-ray disc format.

Man in China Spends $16,000 on Virtual Sword for Video Game

by ITN News - on Dec 28th 2011 - No Comments

Most people wouldn’t blow $16,000 on a real antique sword from ancient China, let alone a virtual sword for a video game set in ancient China.

Not only did a man cough up enough cash for a mid-sized sedan, he did it for a game that’s not even out yet: Age of Wulin, soon to be released in Mainland China by Snail Games. The game is a fantasy MMORPG, or massively multiplayer online role-playing game, not unlike the immensely popular World of Warcraft.

Buying virtual gold and other items in MMORPGs is common. A study released earlier this year valued this virtual economy at $3 billion, with one in four MMORPG gamers spending around $369 each year on virtual swag.

Of course, $369 is pretty far from $16,000 (at least it it’ll be the only sword of its kind available in the game). According to U.K.-based Daily Mail, another gamer spent $1,600 for the “Hook of Departure,” while someone else dished out $2,500 for the “Lordly Spear Sheath.”

I hope for their sake that Age of Wulin turns out to be a decent game. Imagine spending $16,000 on The Matrix Online.

The Finnish developer said during a press conference in London this afternoon that the game will launch on Steam.

A single screenshot, below, has been released.

The announcement was made at London’s Nokia House, as Remedy VP Aki Järvilehto spoke about the company’s adoption of digital distribution.

The PC version of Alan Wake will come packaged with The Signal and The Writer, the two well-received DLC add-ons for the game.
